We recently visited Joshua Tree National Park and ended up adding a few other state and local parks to our trip as we were "stuck" in beautiful California due to winter storm Fern on the east coast! Needless to say, we also ended up visiting Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Agua Caliente, Coachella Valley Preserve, the San Andreas Fault and eventually made our way to San Diego to try for direct flight options.
So many gems in this area! Anza-Borrego in particular offered badlands, beautiful mountain landscapes surrounded by desert wildflowers, palm oases, and really cool wildlife - lots of big horn sheep, jack rabbits, and road runners. Definitely a new favorite!
January was the perfect time of year to spend exploring this area. Temperatures were chilly in the morning but comfortable 60s in the afternoon. Highly recommend checking these places out between January and March! The Wildflowers are also best this time of year, and the Joshua Trees are usually in bloom as well.
